Air Tahiti Nui – Even Economy Was Pleasant

The one thing I really like about some of the Pacific Island airlines is the way they incorporate their culture into their national airline.  Air Tahiti Nui won’t be the choice of those seeking aspirational awards because J class is only a recliner, not lie flat. See my post on how to book award seats on Air Tahiti Nui.

.

But the economy is a good deal for those redeeming economy as the cabin has a 2-4-2 layout so couples can grab seats and be sure of not having to share a 3 seater with a stranger.  We got lucky with a plane that had lots of empty seats so my husband shifted into the aisle across while I kept the 2 seater so we could spread out and pretend we were in J.

.

I loved the blue and green colour scheme and the way the FA’s wore typical Tahitian clothing, it makes you feel like your holiday has started already!

IMG_9753 The most important tip I can give you about seat selection is AVOID THE MIDDLE ROWS INBOUND TO TAHITI!

Upon arrival at PPT, they disembarked from both the front and rear staircases, leaving the middle row passengers as the last ones off the aircraft.

IMG_9756 IMG_9757A Hawaiian Airline plane had arrived just before us and the immigration lines were horrific!  They seem to take forever processing each person and there were only 3 officers on duty.  They do try to make it bearable by having a nice Tahitian band and dancer to welcome and entertain the new arrivals.

Getting Around French Polynesia – Domestic Flights

Flights within French Polynesia are operated by Air Tahiti (not to be confused with Air Tahiti Nui, the international carrier). Flights are all one-cabin but they won’t be full as they can’t sell all the seats due to weight restrictions landing on the smaller islands.

.

The two biggest problems are:

1.  You can’t use miles to book these flights.  Air Tahiti doesn’t have any partnerships with any other airline.  You could use cash back type points such as Ultimate Rewards or Barclay’s Arrival points.

2.  The flights are VERY expensive!   Those of you who have been to Bora Bora ain’t seen nothing yet, but now you know why we had to resort to ramen noodles to at least make up a bit of the budget!  They accept most major credit cards so at least you will get a decent amount of miles from the bank!

.

Air Tahiti Destinations

FLIGHT SCHEDULES

You can download a timetable for all Air Tahiti flights.  They are updated twice a year, in March and September.  As you can see above, most flights to the outer islands go via Papeete but within each island group there are connecting flights.  You can’t go from one island group such as the Australes (where Rimatara is located) directly to another group such as the Marquesas (where Ua Huka is located).

ISLAND PASSES

In my case, I was targeting two specific bird species which are only found on two specific islands and I was limited by both time and money.  Therefore all we could do was buy two round-trip tickets from Papeete to Ua Huka and Rimatara.  For those who have more time and money, you can get island passes which give you several flights within an island group.  There are strict rules associated with these passes, you can see more here.

.

If we had more time and money to spend, we definitely would have gone for a Marquesas Pass.  Even just flying over the various islands, I could see they were stunningly beautiful, would put Bora Bora to shame!

.

Terms & Conditions for Passes

Pass fares are offered to adults (over 12 years old) and children (2 to 11 years). There are no Pass fares for infants.

As a general rule, all Passes start and finish in Tahiti or Moorea.

You do not have to visit all of the islands included in your chosen Pass, but at least two islands must be visited.

Each island may be visited only once (a single stopover per island); returning to Tahiti while using the Pass is not permitted.

All of your flights must be confirmed at the time of issuing your ticket.

The length of your trip may not exceed 28 days from the start date, including for Passes with one or more Extensions.

These fares may not be used in conjunction with other fares offered by Air Tahiti and are applicable for payment by cheque, credit/debit card or cash only.

Transits or stopovers in Tahiti while using the Pass

Transits or stopovers in Tahiti while using your Pass are not permitted, except:

  • for the Lagoons Pass, between Moorea and the islands of the Tuamotu Archipelago
  • for a Pass with Extension, between Pass and Extension

For these exceptions, a maximum transit of 24 hours in Tahiti is permitted.

Stopover (stop lasting more than 24hrs) on an island other than Tahiti

A single stopover is permitted per island.

A transit (stop lasting less than 24 hours) with a change of flight number is considered a stopover except for flights from Bora Bora via Rangiroa to Tikehau, Manihi or Fakarava. For these flights, when there is a flight number change with a stop of less than 2 hours in Rangiroa, such a stop may be considered a transit rather than a stopover.

Passes including more than one group of islands.

All of the islands from a given archipelago must be visited before moving on to the next archipelago (e.g. for the Bora Bora-Tuamotu Pass, all of the islands from the Society Islands archipelago must be visited before moving on to those of the Tuamotu Archipelago).

Within a given archipelago, the islands may be visited in any order, subject to feasibility with regard to Air Tahiti’s flight schedule.

Extensions

An Extension may not be purchased on its own; it must be combined with one of the Passes.

Extensions must be used before or after the Pass.

It is permitted to purchase both Extensions.

A 24-hour stop in Tahiti between Pass and Extension is permitted.

Future of Travels Part 2

Following on from part 1, Skyscanner brings us this fascinating look at what airports and planes of the future might be like.  No more 1st class, business class, economy, there will be sitting zones, sleeping zones and eating zones.  That should make redemptions interesting!

.

The trip to the airport will be positively pleasurable as our traveler spends his time surfing the web or chatting to friends and family in a taxi equipped with virtual reality and cyber-connected technology.

He will eagerly anticipate his arrival at an airport that has been transformed from the transit holding station of today into a luxury Aeroville, with body-morphing seats, shoppable virtual walls, 3D cinemas, rooftop swimming pools and yoga centers set amid atrium forests.

Molecular scanners, digital bag tags, and facial and retinal recognition technology will have eliminated lines at security and check-in. Holographic staff members will guide our traveler seamlessly to his seat that molds to his body shape and comes with 3D multimedia and internet connection as standard.

Vueling Fares To Tenerife Increasing Around Conference Dates

If anyone if planning to attend the World Parrot Conference at Tenerife, I wouldn’t delay booking your flights.  I’m already seeing availability in low fare classes disappearing for flights arriving in Tenerife on 21 or 22 Sept and departing 26 or 27 Sept.  Also consider that you must book by 1 June for the early bird rates for the conference itself!

Here’s a look at Vueling’s current fares.

.

SriLankan Airlines Joins Oneworld

It’s official, Sri Lankan Airlines is the latest member of OneWorld, hot on the heels of US Airways and TAM!  Depending on the routing rules of your OneWorld airline’s frequent flyer program, this can open up some great opportunities for mini-eco-tourism stops when flying between Europe & Asia.  Have a look at the route map.  I highlighted the destinations Sri Lankan serves with their own metal as code-shares usually can’t be booked as awards.

SriLankan RoutesSPENDING A DAY LAYOVER IN COLOMBO, SRI LANKA

Most nationalities can transit Sri Lanka without a visa.  This makes it very easy to do a day trip to Kithulgala for some amazing birding!

Transit visa

Transit visa up to 48 hours currently issued free of charge only at www.eta.gov.lk (travelers must have ETA reference number)

If there is any inquiry regarding ETA pleases contact:

Hotline: 0094 71 9967888
fax: 0094 11 2674631
email: eta@immigration.gov.lk

Now in actual practice, you will only get less than 24 hours if you are using a transit through Colombo as part of an award.  This is still time to make a day trip to Kithulgala.  I’ve blogged about my stay there last year.  Even though we stayed the night, it’s close enough to the airport that you could hire a taxi for the day in the arrival hall to go there.

Bargain Airfares From Copa

Irresistible Offers from USA!

If you have been reading my posts about Central America from last year or wanting to go to Peru for Tambopata, you are in luck!

.

Discover all the advantages of flying through the Hub of the Americas in Panama with Copa Airlines.  There’s great birding in Panama if you take a stopover there!  Or connect to Costa Rica which has lots of birding options whether you are a beginner or advanced birder!  Don’t forget my insider’s tip on using Vegas as your gateway airport to avoid the more congested international gateway airports.  Take advantage of these cheap fares to save some miles and make your eco-tourism adventure come true!

Use Your Miles To Get To Tenerife For The Loro Parque Parrot Conference

The VIII International Parrot Convention, organized by Loro Parque and Loro Parque Fundación, will take place in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, from 22nd to 25th September 2014.

This conference takes place every 4 years and is one of the best conferences that is geared for conservationists and eco-tourism.  Several of the speakers represent parrot research projects from all over the world.  See the full program.

The cheapest way to get to Tenerife is by using miles from a OneWorld airline member such as American Airlines or British Airways on Iberia.  The Tenerife Norte airport (TFN) is closer to the conference location of Puerto del la Cruz although the southern airport (TFS) can also be used with a longer commute by bus or taxi.

Iberia flights to Tenerife Norte

Availability is limited so you want to get in quick!  You should arrive well before 19:00 on Monday when the conference has the inauguration speech.  Here is availability for Monday, 22 Sept.

To use American miles or British Airways Avios, you need the Iberia site to show availability in Blue class.  These flights can be added on to any other OneWorld redemption, for example LAX-DFW-MAD on American or Iberia, then connection to Tenerife.  I’d be shooting for the morning flight as the one that gets in at 17:35 on a Monday is cutting it too close.  Actually, we are flying in the day before and have had our tickets booked for months!

.

If you want to play it safe and arrive the day before, here is availability for Sunday, 21 Sept.

As you can see, only the first flight has availability in Blue class.  If you miss out, you can book using Iberia Avios (transferred in from British Airways or SPG) at a higher level.

.

.

To get back to Madrid and subsequently your homeward flight, start with one of these flights on the 26th (after the conference) which show availability in Blue class.

.

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

Using the example of Dallas as a nice central AA hub, we see good availability on British Airways on the 20th which can be used with one of the Iberia flights above.  Beware that using British Airways can come with a hefty fuel surcharge of $312!  Since the AA website doesn’t show Iberia’s availability, you could experiment with the Iberia site to try to make a good connection or simply call American Airlines to find the space.  If you travel on the 19th instead of the 20th on American Airlines, the taxes are only $5.  The savings of $307 would more than pay for a night at a hotel in Madrid or Tenerife!  You will need 60,000 miles for the round-trip in economy all the way from the USA to Tenerife which could be easily obtained by getting a Citibank credit card or two!

From Australia you are looking at 90,000 round trip in economy and the fuel surcharges/taxes could go as high as $500-ish if you can’t avoid British Airways.

.

If you are new to the world of miles and points, the above may be a bit confusing so please feel free to ask questions in the comments if you need further clarification.

TAM & US Airways Join OneWorld Alliance

Although I am not sure what time in which time zone, sometime within the next couple of hours, TAM and US Airways will have officially left Star Alliance and joined OneWorld.  If you are a member of American AAdvantage or British Airways Avios, this means you now have 2 new airlines to book awards on!  If you are a member of US Airways Dividend Miles, this means you will now be booking your awards using the OneWorld alliance partners. You will find US Airways listed as an American Airlines affiliate since they are in the process of merging.

.

US Airways also plans to continue partnerships with some Star Alliance airlines on an individual basis –  Aegean, Air China, Air New Zealand, Shenzhen Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, TAM, TAP and Turkish Airways.  We still don’t know if you will be able to mix awards using OneWorld airlines and these individual partners.  Some of the partners such as Air New Zealand & Singapore Airlines will end this agreement in June.

HEADS UP TO ECO-TOURISTS

With TAM in OneWorld, this creates a nice opportunity for cheap award flights around Brazil using Avios!  I’ve highlighted a few destinations in yellow in the route map below that are of greatest interest to birders.  Brazil is a very easy country to get around and it is very simple to book most of the best eco-lodges online so this will make it easy to create your own individualized birding itinerary!

.

US Airways has added more routes within the USA and to Europe and a few routes to the Caribbean which may be helpful.

In just one more month, Sri Lankan Airlines also joins OneWorld and opens up more possibilities to this gorgeous country with amazing birds that I was blogging about for a couple months!

Be Aware Of Delayed Flights

Flightstats is a very useful website that also has an iPhone & Android app.  I’ll be doing several posts to show how to use it to best advantage.  For this post, we will look at flight delays.

.

The Global Delay section in the “Delays” tabs will tell you which flights are being cancelled or delayed around the world.  I typically start monitoring this a few days before my flight to beep track of any potential problems.

.

Next I would click on the Asia Pacific tab to see if there are any problems in my upcoming flights.  I often do connect through Singapore so seeing it at the top of the Departure Airports list would set off alarm bells and prompt a further investigation.

.

Unfortunately Flightstats only collects exact delay information on US airports but there are other things we can look at.  Click on the SIN hyperlinked in blue, then click on the Departures tab once you are on the SIN Changi page.

It defaults to the current time with upcoming flights.  There are no imminent delays and I want to see why SIN was at the top of the list.  I can change the time by either clicking on “Change Airport” or by changing the time slot which I highlighted in yellow.

.

Going back to 3pm, I can see a Garuda flight was 6 hours late.  Most other flights were on time or just a few minutes delay.  That’s good news, the problem wasn’t affecting the entire airport like a weather, air traffic control or similar problem.  But if I was traveling on Garuda tomorrow, I would be calling them to double check the late flight wasn’t going to impact on my flight.

.

I’m not on Garuda, let’s say I am connecting to Turkish Airlines to fly to Istanbul.

.

Luckily, both the flight to Istanbul and the flight from Jakarta are on time.  At this point, I would check the arriving flight from Jakarta since apparently TK does a IST-SIN-JKT-SIN-IST itinerary.

.

The incoming flight from IST is 16 minutes late which is not a huge problem at Changi.  And the plane I will be on which originates in Jakarta is arriving on time so barring any unforseen complications, I can be 99% sure of an on-time flight!
