Great Holiday Gift For Birders & Eco-Tourists

During our trip around Africa, the use of Scottevests was essential to allowing us to stick to carry-on bags only. It wasn’t the size of the bags, it was the weight. Most birders have lots of heavy camera gear and bird field guides. At several airports, they weighed our carry-ons and we would have been forced to check some bags if we didn’t have the Scottevests to stuff the heavy stuff into! Cool Gadget – In-flight Pouch
Since next year’s trip involves a lot of economy flights, I was looking for a way to keep things I need during the flight on hand so I don’t have to keep digging into my backpack in the overhead locker. This one looks nice, has lots of pockets and fits neatly into the seat pocket. Has anyone ever used one of these?
Staying Hydrated While Birding
Here in Australia the weather is heating up which reminds me how important it is to stay hydrated when you are hiking through a national park looking for birds. There are many different ways to carry water with you. You may elect to buy one mineral water bottle and just keep refilling it if you are in a place where water is safe to drink. Or you can get a product like this collapsible water bottle which has the added feature of collapsing down so you can carry it past airport security empty, then fill it up at a water fountain.
If you are birding somewhere that doesn’t have safe tap water, most eco-lodges will supply boiled water for you to refill bottle such as these or if you are camping then you can boil your own water. Whatever you do, stay hydrated and stay safe!
