30,000 Bonus Starpoints For SPG Amex (USA)

From time to time Amex runs specials for their card holders that allows them to refer friends for an extra special deal.  The usual sign up bonus for this card is 25,000 points but until the end of June it has increased to 30,000 points.  The card holder (me) gets a bonus of 5000 points for each referral.  I do not have an affiliate marketing relationship with Amex, any card holder gets the same offer – you will too the next time around!

.

Your friends must apply for the Card through the REFER NOW buttons in the email (that I will send you) and be approved in order for you to earn your Referral Bonus.

And for a limited time, each friend can earn up to 30,000 bonus Starpoints: 10,000 Starpoints after their first purchase on the Card in addition to 20,000 Starpoints after they make $5,000 in purchases within their first 6 months of Card Membership.2,3 Referrals need to occur by June 30, 2014 and your friend must be approved by June 30, 2014 to be eligible for this limited time offer.

After you have met your minimum spend (pretty easy to do since they give you 6 months to do it), you will have at least 35,000 Starpoints in your account.  The best use of Starpoints for eco-tourists is to transfer them to airlines in blocks of 20,000 points as they give you a bonus of 5000 points so you end up with 25,000 miles in the airline.

If you would like a referral, please either comment here and make sure your real email is in the comment form, only I can see it.  Or send me an email tara at milestothewild.com.

I recommend transferring them to American AAdvantage or US Airways and depending on your destination maybe one of the others I highlighted below.  Don’t transfer them to United as they have a poor rate of exchange.  Here is the full list of partners.

Should You Use Pointshound Or Rocketmiles?

One of the easiest ways to earn miles is to use certain hotel booking engines.  There are currently 2 programs that give miles for your hotel bookings.  Generally speaking, Pointshound has more options but gives fewer miles.  Rocketmiles gives you at least 1000 miles per booking but they have a lot fewer options and don’t serve all the places Pointshound does.  I’ve been able to book small eco-lodges on Pointshound but so far I can’t find any smaller places in Rocketmiles.

LINKS TO JOIN

If you are not a member of either program, using my links will give you a bonus of 250 miles in Pointshound or 1000 miles in Rocketmiles when you book your first hotel.  I will also get the same amount as a bonus.  You will get links of your own to share to whomever you wish so you keep collecting miles.

ROCKETMILES PARTNERS

.

POINTSHOUND PARTNERS

.

It’s a good idea to check both of them when you need a hotel, then choose the option that is most attractive for your booking.  If you are collecting United miles, only Rocketmiles has them as a partner.  Both programs have American and US Airways.  Neither has Delta but if you want SkyTeam miles they both have Flying Blue.

Example:  Belem, Brazil

.

.

.

Here we can see that Rocketmiles has only 2 options.  Pointshound has the same 2 options at the same price but also has several other hotels which are cheaper than the Radisson and the Crowne Plaza.  Choose what is important to you!

IHG Reveals A List Of Disa-Pointbreaks Valid Thru 31 July

Really not much to interest eco-travelers here. Or anyone for that matter.   Here’s a few that would be good for layovers before heading out to more interesting parts of the country.  Goa would be a nice place to hang out for a beach holiday though for India I much prefer Kerala.  Full Pointbreak list is here.

INDIA
HOLIDAY INN RESORT GOA

THAILAND
CROWNE PLAZA BANGKOK LUMPINI PARK

SOUTH AFRICA
CROWNE PLAZA JOHANNESBURG – THE ROSEBANK

COSTA RICA
CROWNE PLAZA SAN JOSE COROBICI
HOTEL INDIGO SAN JOSE FORUM COSTA RICA

PANAMA
HOLIDAY INN PANAMA CANAL

AUSTRALIA
HOLIDAY INN TOWNSVILLE

FIJI
HOLIDAY INN SUVA

Small town America seems to be the winner here as there are tons of hotels listed.  This could work well if you need to visit family in one of these towns.  Otherwise, this is a pretty boring list.

IHG is even having trouble selling points at a discount on Daily Getaways, lots of packages are going begging!

.

For me, I will use up what remaining points I have but won’t be chasing any more.  I’d rather book indie and have more choices!

How 1 Credit Card Can Get 2 People To South America (Almost) Free

I don’t normally blog about credit cards other than my guide on how newbies can get “into the game”.  I did want to point out a deal that’s been going on that has just been given an end date.

This deal is available only to people in the USA who have good FICO scores (at least 750) and at least a small business such as Ebay seller, blog, artisan, childcare worker or whatever.

Chase’s Ink Bold & Ink Plus normally give 50,000 Ultimate Rewards points but until 1 June they are offering 60,000 Ultimate Rewards points.  Here are the non-affiliate links.

Ink Bold

Ink Plus

One ticket on United Airlines costs 40,000 points round trip in economy.  I used Seattle to Lima as an example but it applies from any North American city to any South American city.  For 2 people you need 80,000 miles and $147.38 for taxes.

.

So here are the steps in a very basic form to get the 2 tickets.

1.  Apply for card and make minimum spend of $5000 in 3 months.

2.  Get 60,000 points for card.

3.  Organize your household expenses to be paid by the card using bonus categories.

.

4.  Make sure at least $3750 of that $5000 is in a 5x bonus category.  This gets you 18,750 Ultimate Rewards points.  Prepay your internet, phone, cable tv as far ahead as possible.  Go to office supply stores and buy gift cards to grocery stores, department stores or whatever you need.

5.  Remaining $1250 can be in any category.

6.  60,000 + 18, 750 + 1250 = 80,000 Ultimate Rewards which = 2 x tickets to South America!

This is something that comes second nature to me but if you are new to this game and have any questions please ask in the comments.

Daily Getaways First 2 Weeks Announced

.

In the past, Daily Getaways were one of my favourite ways to buy airline miles at very cheap prices.  Back in the day, you could acquire United, American, US Airways & other miles for around $7-8 per block of 1000 miles by purchasing Wyndham miles at Daily Getaways and then transferring them.

Last year the price was raised to around $13 per block of 1000 miles which still wasn’t bad if you live outside the USA and can’t manufacture spend. Earlier this year, Wyndham cut the transfer rate to airlines in half without warning which basically kills this deal as no one is going to pay $27 for 1000 miles unless they are desperate for a top up.  And most people can do a helluva lot better than a Super 8 if they have a budget of $84!

This year there isn’t much to interest eco-tourists.  I wouldn’t buy points for a hotel, I would rather use a portal such as Pointshound and have a wider choice.  Here are the first 2 weeks in case anyone is interested.  The only possible bargain I can see is Choice ONLY if you are going to use them in Europe.  Don’t bother using them in Australia, the rates are too high.  The program also has an annoying 60 window for booking hotel rewards which cramps the style of those who like to book early.

IHG Rewards are a good deal if you are planning to use them at an expensive place like Bora Bora, Paris or any of the 50,000 point properties which would cost $292.50 a night if you have an Amex.  Hilton is way too expensive, at that level I would be Pricelining for a 4 or 5* hotel.  Don’t bother!

.

.

In past years I used to get up at 3am in Brisbane to buy these and they sold out in seconds.  This year, I’ll probably wake up at my normal time to see packages going begging.

Lifemiles Brings Back “The Best Promotion in the Americas”

Remember, you should only buy miles if you will be using them very soon as there is always a risk they may devalue.  Having said that, Lifemiles is now the cheapest source of Star Alliance miles since US Airways joined OneWorld if you can’t manufacture spend.

Miles For Mother’s Day Flowers

It’s that time of year where we honor our Mothers!  Mother’s Day is only 2 weeks away so it’s a great time to decide what you are going to do to make your Mother feel special, even if you happen to live far away from her such as I do.  No woman can resist a beautiful bouquet of flowers and the good news is that flowers can easily be ordered online and sent to your Mother anywhere in the world……………………and by using the right links you can get miles for them!

ULTIMATE REWARDS

Usually Chase’s Ultimate Rewards is my first port of call for click thru portals so I had a look here to see what was on offer.  Always check ALL portals before making a decision as you will see later on.

Best offer here is FTD for 15 extra points.  During the year, this is probably your best bet but around Mother’s Day, most airlines will put on special offers through their own portals.

UNITED AIRLINES

I’ll use United as an example but the same principle applies to all airlines with shopping partners.

From the airline’s main website, go to the tab with the frequent flyer program, then look for the retail shopping partners.  I don’t mean United’s online shopping mall (though they will also have flower offers) but the partner section.

.

You will see lots of offers and the one we want is right at the top.

.

30 miles per dollar is pretty good!  Before you take that offer, it’s a good idea to check all the airlines you are collecting miles in such as American, Delta, British Airways or whatever to see if they have better offers.  Since I am actively collecting United’s miles for a goal, I basically just need to compare Ultimate Rewards and what is on United’s website.

You will know you are in the right place if you see the United Airlines welcome message at the top.

.

After you have chosen your flowers, there is still one last step to insure you get your miles.  On the very last screen where you put the payment information, there is a place to fill in your United Mileage Plus number (or whatever airline’s program you used to click through).  Don’t forget this step or you won’t get any miles!

.

Miles usually post about 2 weeks after delivery.  Enjoy your flowers and more importantly, appreciate your Mother, you only get one!
