US Airways Has 100% Bonus Promo Through 31 August

This seems to be a regular monthly event.  I normally don’t advise buying miles unless you need to top off an account for a redemption within the next year or so.  Here are the details of the promo in case anyone is interested.  I won’t be buying but if you need to top off your AA account, these US miles will become AA miles sometime next year when the programs merge.  These promos can be a good deal if you are not an American and don’t have access to credit card sign-ups.

How To Get United Miles From Booking Some Eco-Lodges

Since PointsHound has unfortunately discontinued their relationship with United Airlines you will need an alternate method if you really need United miles and aren’t happy with any of PointsHound’s other partners.

For people living in the USA, the best current option is Ultimate Rewards.  Hotels.com offers a bonus 3 points per $ when you click through their link.  Ultimate Rewards transfer to United and other partners at 1:1.  For example if you book a lodge that costs $150 a night, you will get 450 bonus Ultimate Rewards points on top of whatever credit card multipliers such as 2x for the Chase Sapphire Preferred.  (Sorry folks, don’t have an affiliate link).

Mix Miles And Cash On Singaporeair.com‏

Singapore Airlines is on my recommended list of airline programs to join, especially for Australians as there are a number of credit card options to earn miles.  I got this email from Krisflyer announcing their new rememption option which is great if you just need a few miles to top up your account.  I also like the possibility of using miles to pay the taxes.  This is very similar to Virgin Velocity’s program.

We are pleased to inform you, that from 18 July 2013, you will be able to use your
KrisFlyer miles to pay for all, or a part of your Singapore Airlines or SilkAir airfare
(including taxes and surcharges) when you book on singaporeair.com

With this new feature, you can:

.

You may also like to know that in subsequent enhancements, you can use your
KrisFlyer miles to cover the cost of taxes and surcharges associated with your
redemption award tickets.

We hope that you will benefit from this additional option to use your KrisFlyer miles,
and we look forward to welcoming you on board soon.

They have prepared a nice tutorial on how to use the new feature.  Launch the demo to see a step by step guide.  This feature will only work on booking SQ flights  as partner flights can’t be booked online.  The screenshot below shows the slider tool you can use to toggle between cash and miles.  Always great to have more options!

Planning The “Mother Of All African Adventures” With Miles

In my five year plan, I had Africa penciled in for 2017.  Two shorter trips to India & Sri Lanka in Feb and the Marquesas in Oct-ish were penciled in for 2015.  I decided to swap them around because the trip to Africa is far more vulnerable to the frequent flier mile game than the others are, also because the Africa trip is best done with United miles ex-Australia.  With United, you can have both a stop-over and an open jaw and I will probably need to make use of at least one of these.  This is my tentative award itinerary, not the actual dates but I just experimented with what was available.  I have a stop-over in Accra and an open jaw between Kilimanjaro and Johannesburg.

.

This is what it will cost for 2 tickets in Y with the taxes.  I don’t think I can get the extra 100k for business class without considerable extra expense.

.

I will still need some other airline tickets.  From Kilimanjaro, we need to get to Madagascar.  The easiest way to do this is with Kenya Airways.  Depending on schedules and layover rules we could either fly from Kilimanjaro-Nairobi-Antananarivo or take the bus to Dar Es Salam and then to Nairobi-Antananarivo.  Theoretically, we should also be able to use a combination of Ethiopian and South African Airways to go Kilimanjaro-Addis Ababa-Johannesburg-Antananarivo but South African Airways doesn’t seem to release ANY awards at all on this segment.

Flying Blue (Air France & KLM’s program) would require 17,500 miles each for the one way award that would otherwise cost $1400 for both of us.  Hopefully I can get an Amex with enough MR (Membership Rewards) points to transfer to Flying Blue.

Next we need a flight from Antananarivo to Mauritius.  This will have to be a cash ticket as only Air Madagascar and Air Mauritius fly this route.  I can use IHG points for a free room here.

From Mauritius, we will go to Port Elizabeth via Johannesburg because there is an amazing bird park there I would like to revisit called Birds of Eden.  I can use the BOGO award from my Club Carlson Visa to get 2 nights at the Radisson Blu for 38,000 points.  Flights on South African Airways are 12,500 United miles each Y class or we might have to buy up to J class if Y is not available.  Current research shows J is easier to get than Y on this route.

Domestic flights within South Africa are cheap enough so we will fly back to Johannesburg, pick up a rental car and revisit the wonderful northern Kruger Park I have been blogging about and Magoebaskloof which is next on the blogging list.  If I need hotels in Johannesburg due to flight schedules both IHG and Club Carlson have properties.

IN SUMMARY

BNE-ACC-JRO/-JNB-BNE 200,000 United miles.  I have the miles already.

JRO/DAR-NBO-TNR 35,000 Flying Blue miles.  I need an Amex with Membership Rewards in my next churn.

TNR-MRU have to pay cash.

MRU-JNB-PLZ 25,000 or 50,000 United Miles depending on class of service.  Planning to add an Ink Plus in my next churn to cover this.

PLZ-JNB cash tickets are cheap.

Can use hotel points in Mauritius, Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg.  Otherwise will be eco-lodges in parks or whatever else I can find at a good price.

The Sky Didn’t Fall After All

This is a follow-up to my post from the other day.  After much speculation in FlyerTalk over the mysterious tweet from United, the cat has been let out of the bag.  It’s a partnership with Marriott Hotels.  A big yawn for me personally as they don’t have many hotels in destinations frequented by eco-tourists.  I would have preferred a partnership with IHG hotels as they have a much larger global network.  At least there were no devalutions though I didn’t think there would be.  The people who rushed to burn their UA miles must be feeling pretty foolish.  Here’s the details of the new program.

Two global travel leaders, one great experience.

Loyalty Applauded. Awarded. Rewarded………………….Or Not?

A couple days ago, I got this email from Club Carlson on 2 July to be exact.  On first glance, it looks like a standard “look what a great program we are” email.

Learn more about all of your exclusive Club Carlson benefits.Club Carlson. Loyalty Applauded. Awarded. Rewarded.

Date of email 2 July.  Date of devaluation 1 July.

People on FlyerTalk saw it first and the news quickly spread to other travel blogs.  No one was THAT upset over the increase in airline miles redemptions.  What we were upset about is the lack of advance notice so we could redeem at the rates we signed up for if we so desired.  Messages to Club Carlson on Facebook and Twitter have only met with a canned reply copy/pasted to everyone.

Now in most cases, transferring to airline miles isn’t always the best use of hotel points but if you need to top up for a special award they can be very useful.  I had earmarked 100k Club Carlson points for 18k United to top up what I need for the trip to Africa in 2015.  I did however note that around Nov/Dec last year, United had a partner bonus promo so I was anticipating they would have one again this year so I had not transferred the Club Carlson points yet.  If I had know about the devaluation, I would have done my transfer beforehand.  I have enough points to easily cover the chain hotels I need for the next couple years at least and can spare the 100k for miles.

For many of us, it takes time to save up for rewards, especially when there is a tier structure with a higher amount gaining a better transfer rate.

This is what it was before.

  • 2,000 points = 250 miles
  • 50,000 points = 8,000 miles
  • 100,000 points = 18,000 miles

This is what it is now:

  • 2,000 points = 200 miles
  • 50,000 points = 5,000 miles
  • 100,000 points = 10,000 miles

While hotel points are of limited value to eco-tourists, they still have value whether for free hotel nights or airline miles and if you spend most of your time in eco-lodges you will probably have more use for airline miles.  There are some good redemptions for eco-travelers such as this one in Panama.

Bottom line is I don’t feel very “applauded, awarded, rewarded” right now.  I did go to a lot of trouble to acquire those points and even bought some during  a flash sale a couple week ago to top off my needs for both airline miles and hotels for the next couple years.  Loyalty is a two-way street and Club Carlson needs to learn that.  They do have some nice hotels but we don’t HAVE to be loyal to Club Carlson to book them.  We can use Pointshound (my referral link), Expedia, Hotels.com or dozens of other booking sites.

I challenge Club Carlson to do the right thing and give a grace period of at least 72 hours for people to redeem at the old rates.  True, their hotel rewards are still a good deal but who can say they won’t do the same thing with them in the future.  For now, don’t sit on your points, if you have them, use them up.  Then be loyal to yourself.  Use the credit cards if you get a free or super-cheap night out of them but do your bookings wherever you get the best benefit.
