Getting To South Africa Using Frequent Flyer Miles

Africa attracts the lion’s share (pun intended) of eco-tourists and the good news is you don’t have to spend a fortune to get there!

.

There are several regions in Africa that will appeal to birders especially so in this post we will have a look at South Africa.  Most people would be flying into Johannesburg (JNB) but some may prefer to fly into Cape Town (CPT) so I will give options for both using my recommended frequent flier programs.

STAR ALLIANCE

UNITED AIRLINES

With United, it’s easiest to use their interactive award chart.  To illustrate the mileage required you can just look at the “from Africa” section.  These awards are on a one-way basis.  If you are planning a multi-destination trip around Africa, you should book it as a round-trip to take advantage of a free stopover and open jaw to get more destination in the award.

.

Region Definitions: The chart above is for travel between the following regions.

  • Central & Southern Africa (includes Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo, Cote D’lvoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Reunion Island, Rwanda, S. Africa, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe)

Mileage award rates are quoted for one way savers.

To get to South Africa from the USA and Canada, it’s 40k in economy and 60k in Business.   JNB is served by South African Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Thai, Egypt Air, Turkish and Singapore.  CPT is served by South African.

From Australia and New Zealand, it’s 50k economy and 75k business.  You’d be using Singapore or Thai connecting to South African, Ethiopian or Egypt Air.

From Europe it’s 30k economy and 45k business with connections on South African, Egypt Air, Turkish and Ethiopian.

You may also want to use your miles for intra-Africa trips but for domestic flights you would probably be better off paying for a cheap ticket online.  You can get to other places in Africa for 12.5k economy and 25 business with South African, Ethiopian.  Please note that Egypt is in the North Africa region so costs 22.5k economy and 35k business.

AVIANCA-TACA LIFEMILES

This program is a favourite with those who can’t easily get miles from the generous USA based credit cards as they often sell miles cheaply.  The mileage costs are roughly the same as United but please note in the screenshot how much you can save by using the “More Money” feature to buy miles at roughly $0.15 each if you can’t otherwise get Lifemiles.   Of course if you have more Lifemiles than $$ then simply book the “More miles” option.  Check them out on their website.   In the examples below, I show you an economy trip from New York to Johannesburg and a business class trip from Brisbane to Johannesburg.

.

.

.

SINGAPORE AIRLINES KRISFLYER

SQ is a great option if you live in a country where Amex Membership Rewards transfer to Krisflyer such as Australia.  The YQ fuel surcharge can be pretty high but if you book online for SQ metal awards you save 15% of the mileage cost.  See this example of a one way Brisbane – Johannesburg where the price comes down from 72,500 miles to 61,625 miles.

.

Notice the yellow highlighter below of the $430 YQ surcharge.  This is why I don’t use Krisflyer for redemptions like this.  I would use United in this case.

.

ONE WORLD AIRLINES

AMERICAN AADVANTAGE

This is the most popular of the One World alliance frequent flyer programs and they do have some great award options.  If you are coming from North America and route via LHR on BA or MAD on IB you will have to pay fuel surcharges.  You can save these charges if you use Air Berlin or Finnair from North America to Europe, then Etihad to Johannesburg.  British Airways is the only airline serving Cape Town so you will most likely have to use Johannesburg as your gateway with One World.  Later this year, when Qatar Airways joins One World, that opens up more routings too.  Honestly, for trips to Africa, Star Alliance rules so I would be using their miles first.

.

All awards are priced as one way awards, add 2 to get a round trip.

From North America – Economy is 37.5k and business is 75k.  Use British Airways, Iberia (see note above) or Air Berlin or Finnair to Europe, then Etihad to Johannesburg.  In late 2013, Qatar Airways will be available.

From Europe – Economy is 30k and business is 37.5k.  Use British Airways, Iberia (see note above) or Air Berlin or Finnair to Europe, then Etihad to Johannesburg.  In late 2013, Qatar Airways will be available.

From Australia & New Zealand – Economy is 37.5k ,business is 50k.  Use Qantas, Malaysian or Cathay Pacific to Asia, then Etihad or Qatar (late 2013) to Johannesburg.

Within Africa – economy is 10k, business is 17.5k.  Options are very limited with only a few routes served by British Airways/Comair such as Johannesburg to Cape Town, Durban, Harare, Livingstone, Maputo, Mauritius, Port Elizabeth, Victoria Falls and Windhoek.

BRITISH AIRWAYS & IBERIA AVIOS

This is a distance-based program so use Great Circle Mapper and the Avios Chart to calculate the award cost.  All awards are priced as one ways awards, add 2 to get a round trip.

Avios Zone Chart

You have to add each segment’s award separately.

.

In these examples, London to Jo’burg is 5620 miles so falls in zone 7 and costs 30k in economy and 60k in business.  If someone connects in Doha when Qatar Airways joins One World, there are 2 segments.  New York to Doha is 6703 miles which falls in zone 8 and costs 35k in economy and 70k business class.  Then you add Doha to Jo’burg which is 3862 miles, falling in zone 5 and costs 20k economy and 40k business.  The whole trip from New York to Jo’burg would cost 55k economy and 110k business.

The British Airways/Comair flights can be a bargain.

In the examples above, Jo’burg to either Harare or Victoria Falls is in zone 1 so only costs 4500 Avios each way in economy or 9000 business.  Jo’burg to Cape Town is in zone 2 and costs 7500 economy, 15k business.  Jo’burg to Mauritius is in zone 3 and costs 10k economy, 20k business.

QANTAS

Qantas has direct flights from Sydney to Johannesburg with connections from other Australian cities.  The awards are not cheap though.  In this example from Brisbane to Johannesburg it’s a whopping 255k in economy one way!   May be of use to Aussie business travelers who get lots of points from their work travel but too rich for my blood!

.

Using Points plus Pay doesn’t bring any relief but on the bright side it appears to include the YQ tax.

.

SUMMARY

Star Alliance rules Africa!  If you have to use One World, avoid going through London on BA because of the taxes.  I have a trip planned for 2015 and am currently collecting United Miles for this trip.

Best IHG (Priority Club) Pointbreaks For Eco-Tourists

The long-awaited list of IHG Rewards (formerly Priority Club) Pointbreaks is out!  It’s a great list and there are several good options for eco-tourists; some of which I have personally stayed at and can recommend.  The website has been updated to reflect the new name of the loyalty program so you can see the whole Pointbreak list here.  These are the standouts I think eco-tourists should consider but also be sure to check your local airport gateway if you have an early morning flight.  I have provided notes where I have specific details on a hotel.   If you are lacking in IHG Rewards Points, you can buy some tomorrow and Monday very cheaply from Daily Getaways at 1pm EST only.  The details are on their website.  Quantities are reasonable over both days so there should be plenty to go around.

Central & South America

ARGENTINA
HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS ROSARIO
HOLIDAY INN CORDOBA

BRAZIL
HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS CUIABA – We stayed here last year after a late night flight from Sao Paulo.  We had a rental car to see the Pantanal.  The hotel itself is nice with very friendly staff and a good breakfast buffet.  The location is very inconvenient if you want to get out to the Pantanal, it’s on the opposite end of town. There are a lot of closed roads and detours because of the roadworks and we got hopelessly lost and had to pay a local to lead us to the Trans-Pantaneira.
CROWNE PLAZA BELEM – Very nice hotel and convenient location.  Belem is a gateway city for the Amazon region and there is a nice trip to Parrot Island which I will blog about tomorrow in case anyone is planning to stay here.

CHILE
HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS PUERTO MONTT

COLOMBIA
INTERCONTINENTAL MEDELLIN

COSTA RICA
INTERCONTINENTAL REAL SAN JOSE – COSTA RICA – It’s a great deal for a beautiful hotel but don’t go overboard and spend all your time in the city.  Costa Rica has so much more to offer!

EL SALVADOR
CROWNE PLAZA SAN SALVADOR

GUATEMALA
INTERCONTINENTAL REAL GUATEMALA – Very tempting as it’s near the airport and we do have an early morning flight.

HONDURAS
INTERCONTINENTAL REAL TEGUCIGALPA

PANAMA
HOLIDAY INN PANAMA CANAL    – Not good for an early morning flight as it’s far from the airport.  For Panama, I prefer the Radisson as it’s closer to Soberania National Park.

ASIA

NEPAL
CROWNE PLAZA KATHMANDU-SOALTEE – We stayed here before and after a visit to Chitwan National Park in 2011.  Beautiful hotel, excellent breakfast buffet and free drinks in the club if you are platinum.  A bit far from town but taxis are cheap enough.

Birding Central America On A Budget

The countries of Central America are rich in birdlife and easily accessible from the USA so no wonder they are so popular!  It is quite easy to get to Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, Guatemala using frequent flier miles. Just the parrot lists alone could tempt you but when you add in Resplendant Quetzals, Motmots and more……………!  Right now there are two offers that can help get you there very cheaply using miles and points.  In this post, I will talk about getting there on miles.  Priority Club Pointbreaks has some good deals on too but they will be on a separate post.  By taking advantage of these offers, you greatly reduce your costs and have more money to spend on local eco-lodges and great birding guides once you get there!

So how can you tell if this is a good deal for you?

First you need to compare the cost of buying a ticket to Central America with the cost of getting this card and just paying the taxes.  For a quick estimate, just plug the dates into Expedia or Travelocity to get some ideas or use the airlines websites.  Let’s use Belize for an example.  Since we need to use US Airways flights to get the discount of 5000 miles, I will use that as an example.  US Airways flights are seasonal so right now there is no availability after Aug.  In real life, I would have booked this at least 10 months in advance.  For screenshots to illustrate, I will use what I can get.  First thing to look for is the pale blue color code which indicates the low level redemption of 17,500 miles each way, round trip required.

US Airways Availability

I found some, not on the dates I would have preferred but at least we can get a 9 day trip which gives plenty of time to see Belize and Tikal in neighboring Guatemala via San Ignacio.  The system recognizes me as a credit card holder and automatically subtracts 5000 miles.  So as you can see, by signing up for this credit card, you get enough miles for a cheap trip to Central America if you can find the availability.  You won’t be able to do it this year as the bonus will post too late to take advantage of it, but you could plan for next year.  If the merge with AA has taken place by then, your US miles will become AA miles which are also good for getting to Central America.

.

Paying cash for the trip would cost $638 plus tax of $109 which you have to pay in either case so by getting the credit card and booking an award trip you have saved $638.

.

Disclosure:  Using my link which is valid until 31 July gives me a referral credit of 5000 miles if you are approved.  If you choose to use my link, I appreciate your support.  Barclays often has different offers available to different people some better than others and they change rapidly.  Some may be targeted, some may be for everyone.  This thread in FlyerTalk has the most up to date information about what offers are available.  The terms and conditions of the offer are as above in the screenshot and provided in detail here.  Please read them carefully before applying for this card.  Also please make sure that you can pay the card in full each month so you don’t end up with interest charges.  I have had this card for several years and have been happy with it.  When US and AA merge, this card will be going away so you won’t have much longer to get it if you want it.  I am not a qualified financial advisor but if you have questions on how to use this offer, please ask in the comments and I will do my best.

When Should You Use A Promo To Buy Miles & Points?

The holy grail is free travel by manipulating your spending or business travel paid for by your employer in such a way that you get free miles and points for your personal use.  If you are a business traveler, you are probably already doing this so this post will be more useful to non-frequent travelers who want to travel someplace they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford to go.  Many of the places I have been writing about for eco-travel such as Brazil, Peru, Australia, India, the Cook Islands would be only a distant dream if not for miles and points.

Some non-frequently flying people will have better opportunities than others.  Currently people in the USA are the luckiest with all the credit card sign up bonuses and manufactured spending (using a miles/points credit card to buy gift cards that can be liquidated or used to pay the same credit card’s bill).  I have some very basic guides on this but my style is more “teaching you how to fish” rather than spoon-feeding so you need to be able to take the basics and apply them yourself and be proactive about seeking out the best sign-up bonuses.  These can change daily so always check around before getting a new credit card.  Credit card sign-up bonuses are the closest thing to free miles if you use the cards only for things you have to buy anyway and pay the bills off each month.  I suppose Facebook contests and sweepstakes would be true FREE miles but the odds of winning those are so slim.  It’s worth a try if you are active on Facebook.

Some promos such as the Daily Getaways are directed at Americans only and recent reports show that non-US credit cards have been rejected.  Last year, I was able to buy a package from Daily Getaways with an Aussie Amex but haven’t tried yet this year.  Other promos such as the 100% bonus miles when you buy miles are available to anyone.  US Airways and Avianca-Taca are famous for this type of promo.  Then there are shopping promos where you use an airline’s shopping portal to get miles or do a certain number of transactions with partners to get bonus miles.  The US Airways Grand Slam was the best by far of this sort of promo but hasn’t been seen since Sept 2011 and won’t be back because they are merging with American Airlines later this year.  2008-2011 were the golden years for people who wanted to get LOTS of cheap miles with partners if they weren’t true FREQUENT fliers.  My husband and I still have a couple trips left for next year we earned with Grand Slam from previous years.

The thing with promos are that in most cases, you aren’t getting FREE miles/points anymore.  You are paying for them at a reduced rate.  Take Daily Getaways for example.  Next week, there are point purchases available for Best Western, Choice and IHG Priority Club.

.

The following week, IHG Priority Club and Wyndham points are on offer.

.

So how do you know if they represent a good deal for you?

You need to have a good idea of what your future travel plans are.  What airlines can you use, what hotel chains are at the cities you will visit or transit?

Compare the cost of buying points through this promo vs other options.  Can you use a discount code (Expedia, Hotels.com) to book any hotel, not just a chain hotel for a better price?  Can you earn airline miles for your hotel booking via Pointshound?  Can you get free points from getting the hotel’s credit card or transferring points from Amex Membership Rewards (most countries) or Ultimate Rewards (USA only)?  Do you really want to stay in a chain hotel vs a local independant hotel?

Look at what the hotel chain’s reward program allows you to redeem your points for.  Would buying one of these package get you a better value on the hotel chain’s partners?  Here are the pages for the hotel chains to help you determine this, you will have to do your own math though!

Best Western

Choice

IHG (Priority Club)

Wyndham

Converting to airline miles

You will notice that most hotel chains have airlines as their partners so you can redeem hotel points for airline miles.  In past years, this has been extremely lucrative when using Daily Getaways.  This year, the promo has been so over-exposed, the prices have gone up on the point packages so they may or may not represent a good value to you.  Pull out your calculator and start doing the math.  The things you need to consider when buying airline miles in this way.

  • Is it cheaper to just buy the flight and earn miles for it?
  • Can you get a better deal on Priceline, Groupon or similar?
  • Will you be traveling within the next couple of years? (Airlines can depreciate their programs in the meanwhile)
  • Is the hotel program likely to depreciate the redemption rate before you can swap them for airline miles?
  • Is your personal situation likely to change before you have a chance to use the miles (new job, moving, health, fitness, marriage, baby, etc)?
  • Will the points or miles expire before you can use them?
  • Can you afford to outlay the cash now for a possible savings in the future?

If you read a lot of miles and points type travel blogs or forums such as Flyertalk, you will see some people praising these deals as the greatest thing since sliced bread.  For many people, these deals may be the best value, for others they may not be.   Don’t let anyone (blogger or otherwise) whip you into a competitive frenzy over this or any other promo.  They don’t know you, they only know their own situation and what is good for them.  Everyone is an individual and has their own personal circumstances so I would encourage everyone to do their own research and their own math.

Club Carlson Flash Sale, Less Than An Hour Left

Club Carlson has been running these flash sales all week where you get a bonus of 75% when you buy points.  The sales are announced on their Facebook page so you need to be liking the page to see it come up in your feed.

Time for another Gold Points Flash Sale! Buy points with a 75% bonus from now until 10:15 p.m. EDT: http://bit.ly/1488d5j

Club Carlson can be useful to eco-travelers in Panama.

Bonus For Chase Ink Cards – And What You Could Do With It

If you are from the miles and points community, this is old hat.  If you are from the bird watching/eco-tourism community, keep reading to see how you can get an almost free flight if you qualify.  This is a limited time offer.  You normally get 50,000 Ultimate Rewards points for this card but for 1 week you can get 60,000.  This links directly to Chase and is not an affiliate link.  I am just sharing because maybe someone can get some use from this.

Chase Ink Special

The catch is that you have to be able to spend $5000 within the first 3 months of being approved for the card.

.

Bear in mind that this is a small business card and you must answer questions about your business on the application.  If you are a sole proprietor, you will use your own social security number.

.

The most important thing to remember is that you shouldn’t apply for credit cards if you can’t pay the bill in full each month.  You don’t want to be paying interest!

So what can you do with the minimum of 65,000 Ultimate Rewards points?  (5000 minimum from your $5000 minimum spend)  Remember that trip I was blogging about to see Golden Conures in Brazil?  If you transfer your Ultimate Rewards points to United Mileage Plus, you would have enough for a free round-trip from the USA to Manaus or anywhere else in Brazil or South America!  For more information on using credit cards to earn frequent flyer miles, see my other posts (USA edition).

Virgin Velocity – 15% Off Domestic And International Reward Seats

This will be more of interest to Australian readers.  Virgin Velocity is one of the programs I recommend Aussies join as it is very easy to get points from everyday living and also the American Express Membership Rewards program.  If you are new to my blog, please take a few minutes to read the posts I linked above.

Until 30 June, you can save 15% on reward flights.  If you couple this with one of the regular points bonus transfers, this can be a substantial discount on the cost of reward seats.  Velocity usually does a bonus promo at least once a year and offers a 15-30% bonus when you transfer miles from any of their affiliated credit cardsThis promo has finished but it gives you an idea of what to expect.

Getting To Brazil & Southern South America Using Airline Miles

Southern South America

Most frequent flier programs divide the continent of South America into northern and southern regions.  Brazil, which is one of the best destinations for eco-tourism falls into the southern region.  I already have a blog with my recommendations for which programs to join if you are new to the world of miles and points.

The gateway cities for Brazil include Sao Paulo (GRU), Rio de Janieiro (GIG), Manaus (MAO) and Recife (REC).  Other airports in Southern South America are Santiago (SCL), Buenos Aires (EZE), La Paz (LPB) and Santa Cruz Bolivia (VVI).     Once you have been in the miles and points game for awhile, you will get a feel for which airline to use where but if you are just starting out, Wikipedia will show you a list of all airlines that fly into a given airport.

Let’s take Manaus for our first example.  So we can see that  Manaus is served by a few international airlines.  AA flies from Miami, Copa flies from Panama City which has good connection to the USA and TAM flies from Miami as well.   In most cases you will have to transit through the USA even if you are coming from Australia, Europe or Asia direct to Manaus or you could fly to one of the larger airports such as GRU or GIG and get a connecting domestic flight.  If Manaus and the Amazon region are your destination, you have two choices-One World or Star AllianceSky Team can get you to GRU or GIG and then you would have to use domestic flights on GOL which is a partner of Delta.

ONE WORLD OPTIONS

From North America you can use American Airlines or  LATAM.

From South America you can use LATAM.

From Australia and New Zealand you can use Qantas or LATAM via Santiago.

From UK and Europe you can travel via the USA using BA or IB to get to the USA, then AA, LATAM to South America.

From Asia or Africa there are no direct flights so you will need to travel via the USA or Europe.

STAR ALLIANCE OPTIONS

From North America you can use United, Avianca-Taca or Copa

From South America you can use Avianca-Taca

From Australia and New Zealand, Europe, Asia and Africa there are no direct flights, you will need to travel via the USA.  Depending on which program’s miles you have, this may require one or two awards.

SKYTEAM OPTIONS

From North America you can use Aerolineas Argentinas, AeroMexico or Delta.

From Europe you can use Air Europa, Air France or KLM, or you can connect in the USA or Buenos Aires on Aerolineas Argentinas.

From Australia you can use Aerolineas Argentinas, from New Zealand possibly Qantas to Sydney and then Aerolineas Argentinas.

From Asia and Africa there are no direct flights, you will need to travel via the USA or Europe.

Delta partners with GOL which has extensive coverage of Brazil and connections to neighboring countries.

HOW MANY MILES WILL IT COST?

Every airline member of the 3 main alliances has it’s own frequent flier program.  They often have alliances with other airlines outside the program.  I have made some reference charts for the airline alliances and I strongly recommend that you check out the program of the airline in your country and the USA based partners of each program as the USA airlines tend to have the most lucrative bonuses.  Americans can get very generous credit card bonuses.  Details of credit card partners (and other partners) will be on each airline’s website, however often there are more lucrative sign up bonuses.  Details are usually posted in the Flyer Talk thread so I strongly suggest you read this thread and the Miles Buzz forum before you apply for any cards just in case a better bonus has been offered.  I don’t have any affiliate links and I recommend you do extensive research on your own when applying for airline credit cards.

USING ONE WORLD

AMERICAN AIRLINES

No matter where you live, frequent flyer programs based in the USA usually offer the best deals but it’s still a good idea to look at other members of the alliance.  Try to avoid carriers that charge a fuel surcharge.  Looking at AA’s award chart, we can see that Brazil is in South America Zone 2 except for Manaus which is in South America Zone 1.

South America Zone 2

So let’s look at the chart.  AA no longer has all zones on one convenient chart so you need to look at the website for the region you are departing from.  You will notice there are taxes and fees with certain routes and that the awards are prices as one way trips.

We can see that a South Pacific to Central/South America award will cost 45,000 miles each way (90,000 round trip) in economy, 82,500 (160,000 round trip) in business class and 112,500 each way (225,000 round trip in first class.  AA doesn’t allow you to transit the USA on this award so you must fly on the only carriers that operate between Australia and South America-Qantas and LAN.

If you are based in North America, economy will cost 30,000  each way (60,000 round trip), business class  is 57,500 each way (115,000 round trip) and first is 85,000 each way or 170,000 round trip.  You would be flying on AA or LAN.

AVIOS (BA OR IB)

Avios can be a great bargain for shorter flights.  The awards are priced by distance flown per segment rather than zone to zone.

Avios chart

Using the Great Circle Mapper, we can see that a direct flight from Miami to Manaus would cost 12,500 Avios each way, a direct flight from LAX to Sao Paulo would cost 30,000 Avios and a direct flight from NYC to GIG would cost 25,000 Avios.  If you are using credit card miles, transferring them to Avios rather than UA or AA could save you some points.  If you need a connection from elsewhere in the USA to the gateway city, you need to pay for that segment separately with the Avios cost for the distance flown.  Example OKC-MIA is 1222 miles so you need to add 10,000 Avios to the total price of the ticket.

For Qantas, it is easiest to use their points calculator to see how many points you need, then look for availability.  Here is an example of SYD-SCL-GRU in economy class.  For the record, business class (if you can get it) would cost 112,000 each way.

QF Award

Awards are distance based, look what happens when we quote on Perth-Rio de Janiero!  Price for economy goes up to 76,000 each way in economy!

.

If you are based somewhere else, leave a comment if you don’t understand this part and I will help you out.  Meanwhile, here is a reference list for other One World carriers.

USING STAR ALLIANCE

Most people will have United or Singapore Airlines miles via credit cards or be buying Avianca Lifemiles during a 100% bonus promo.

UNITED AIRLINES

United Airlines is a USA based carrier that offers one way awards on its own flights and other Star Alliance carriers.  Due to the size of their award chart, I can’t paste it here so will link to it and give examples.  Seattle to Manaus has availability on several dates which I picked at random.  They are colour coded for economy, business/first or all three classes.

.

Here is the best routing that came up.  Beware of the “mixed cabin” in business class, that means you will have to be in economy for one or more segments.

.

Another random search on LAX-GRU has good availablilty for saver awards in economy but nothing in business or first on United’s own flights.

.

But scroll down to the partner airline awards and suddenly there is tons of availability in business but not in economy!

AVIANCA TACA LIFEMILES

Lifemiles has some very attractive promos to buy and share miles.  While this doesn’t give you a free trip, it can greatly reduce the cost of a trip especially if you are after business or first class awards.  You need to be an existing member of Lifemiles when they announce  a promo so join now if you haven’t already.  Use their calculator to get an idea of award costs.  This will be a range which depends on class and any promos.

They have a Star Alliance Award chart and you can see that they divide the continent of South America into northern and southern regions.

.

I have snipped the section that includes southern South America.  Australia and New Zealand are in the “Others” category.  The chart shows round trip awards but you can redeem one ways for half the price shown.  For Aussies, it’s much cheaper to use US miles while they last or United for Star Alliance awards.  I prefer to keep my Lifemiles for intra-South/Central America awards which can get pricy but are bargains using awards.

SINGAPORE AIRLINES

While there are no bargains here, if you are flush with Amex Membership Rewards you want to transfer to SQ, you can also book flights to South America using Krisflyer.

.

For those who want to use other programs, I have made up a reference list of all the airlines with links to their websites so check them out to see if any of them are better suited to your needs. Bear in mind that the tickets are not completely free, there is usually a booking fee of $25-50 and various taxes, but you would have to pay the taxes whether you pay cash or miles for the ticket in any case.

Club Carlson’s Redemption Changes Mostly Good For Eco-Travelers

Several months ago I blogged about the Club Carlson properties which are located near good birding areas or in gateway cities.  Like all the other hotel chains, they have adjusted their rates but unlike most chains who had major devaluations, there are some great bargains for eco-travelers.

Even though I had already booked our stay at Radisson Summit Hotel & Golf, Panama which is very close to Soberania National Park, I called customer service and got them to rebook it at the lower rate.  Here’s the complete list of hotels changing categories in 2013 and some key hotels to note below.  Almost all the properties in India went down a category (too many to copy), and there are new bargains in the gateway cities of Sao Paulo, San Jose CR, Johannesburg, Cape Town & Tahiti.  You can’t win ’em all and there were increases in Belem, Brazil, Guatemala City and Bangkok.  Remember, if you have any of the superb Club Carlson credit cards, your last night will be free so if you book 2 nights, you will pay for 1 and get the last one free!

While hotel chains don’t offer many options for eco-travelers other than airport gateway stopovers, it doesn’t hurt to maximize the few they do have!
