American AAdvantage Devaluation Approaching

We are just a few weeks away from the dreaded American AAdvantage devaluation which will happen on 22 March.  If you have any travel plans that are substantially cheaper using the old chart valid until 21 March, best to book now to avoid the last minute rush.  American loads awards 330 days in advance so the last potential date of travel is around 22 February depending on when the partner makes inventory available.  I’ve covered the worst parts of this devaluation already and Australians really copped it bad!

NEW CHART ON/AFTER 22 MARCH

Thankfully our travel has long been booked for this year but our 2017 trip is out of range for the old chart so we will be stuck with the devalued awards on the one route we will be using AAdvantage on.

Virgin Velocity Devaluation – 1 June 2016

I got an email with the following:

Last year we celebrated 10 years of Velocity. During this time we have built a world-leading loyalty program*.
As we move forward, I wanted to update you on some adjustments we are making to the program, which will come into effect on 1 June 2016.
Points Expiry
We are making some changes to the expiry of Velocity Points.
Firstly, from 1 June 2016 your Velocity Points will not expire provided you earn or redeem Points at least once every 24 months. Previously, the expiry period was 36 months. Any Points earned from eligible activity prior to 1 June 2016 are not affected by this change and will not expire for 36 months.
Secondly, transferring Points between family members or receiving Points from a Family Pooling relationship will no longer be considered eligible activity to prevent your Points expiring. This change will be applied retrospectively. This means, if on 1 June 2016 your only activity within the previous 36 months is Family Pooling or Points transfer between family members, you will be notified that you need to earn or redeem Points before 30 June 2016 in order to prevent your Points expiring.
Despite these changes:
● It is now easier than ever to remain active by earning Points across a broad range of partners including airlines, credit cards, fuel and online shopping. In the past year alone we have welcomed some major partners including BP, HSBC and Le Club AccorHotels.
● We continue to provide you with more time than any other Australian frequent flyer program to keep your Points active.

Please take comfort knowing you will be notified via email at least 30 days prior to your Points expiring, giving you ample time to earn or use your Points and keep your account active.

Reward Seat Pricing
New Reward Seat bookings flying Virgin Australia or our partner airlines, made on or after 1 June 2016, will be subject to revised Points pricing. As part of these revisions some destinations are increasing in price and others are decreasing. Please see some examples below^:

Velocity deval

This is the first time in over five years that we have made adjustments to Reward Seat pricing. During this time Virgin Australia has undergone significant changes to become a full service airline, providing all guests with complimentary checked baggage allowance, in-flight entertainment, food and beverages.
We remain committed to continue offering you all of the benefits that make us a world-class program, including our award-winning Reward Seat availability*. In addition, the taxes and fees payable when you book a Reward Seat will not be affected by these changes.
For more information on all these changes please refer to our Program Updates.
I look forward to keeping you up to date in the coming months as we introduce exciting new features and benefits, including innovative new ways to earn and use your Points.
Yours sincerely,
Karl Schuster
CEO, Velocity Frequent Flyer

On first glance, the points expiry doesn’t worry me at all.  A simple purchase at BP for fuel or shopping, a purchase from the Velocity shopping portal or E-Rewards will reset the expiry.

The increases on most awards is minimal and some are actually going down.

The biggest devaluation is Etihad who have been moved from Table 1 (cheaper awards) to Table 2 (expensive awards) AND devalued on top of that!

I do have a travel plan for 2017 which includes using Velocity for Etihad on one sector so I am going to have to crunch some numbers and see if I can bring it forward.  I’ve already been messed up by the American devaluation!

AA Offers Buy Miles Promo – Good For Pre-Devaluation Bookings

While I am normally not a fan of buying miles (kind of defeats the purpose of free travel from everyday activities), in this case you may want to top up your account to book an award before the 22 March devaluation.

Here’s the offer, be sure to read the T&Cs.  It’s probably the best price you will get and may be worth it if your desired award will be increasing quite a bit and you don’t have time to get the miles any other way.

IHG Category Increases & Decreases – Who Got Lucky?

If you’re going to Bora Bora, France or Australia – you are NOT the lucky one as the rates to their properties have skyrocketed to a whopping 60,000 points (55,000 for Sydney & Melbourne).

If you are headed to Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Panama, Papua New Guinea, South Africa or Zimbabwe then you are in luck!  Most properties in these countries will be going down 5000 points!

IHG’s Latest List Of Disa-Pointbreaks

I’ve gotten used to seeing uninspiring lists of hotels on IHG’s quarterly Pointbreaks (hotels offered for 5000 points a night) but I was still looking forward to this list as it’s the one that applies to my upcoming trip to Ecuador, Colombia & the Caribbean for birding.  I was hoping to see some poinbreaks in Ecuador, Colombia & Trinidad.  Once again, I was disappointed that there was nothing in Bogota especially.  Even worse, the Crowne Plaza Tequendama which has historically offered pointbreaks at this time of year is leaving the OHG chain!

Here’s the whole list if you want to have a look.

A few may be of interest to eco-travelers in Central & South America.  Belem is good for going to Parrot Island to see 1000’s of Orange-winged Amazons on an early morning cruise.  Panama has the wonderful Soberania National Park within an easy drive of the Holiday Inn.

Try not to spend too much time in Jo-burg, get off to Magoebaskloof or Kruger as quickly as possible but if you do need a night between flights:

South Africa

And here’s a rare Pointbreak in Australia!  Townsville is a good jumping off point for Magnetic Island which has good birding.

This list is valid for bookings and stays from January 25, 2016 through April 30th 2016 (subject to availability).

Flybuys Warning

Now that Flybuys has teamed up with Etihad, many Aussies are trying to get as many Flybuys points as possible.  One of the best ways is to use a credit card that has a category bonus on supermarkets such as the American Express Platinum Edge.  You can sometimes extend this category bonus by buying gift cards for non-bonused categories in a supermarket.  Another way to maximize your points earn is to use the various promotions that are emailed or sent out as quarterly coupons and usually have a fixed target.  In the past I have had 500 bonus Flybuys for a $110 spend and used it to good advantage.

This is what I was trying to do when I bought Bunnings gift cards at Coles Supermarkets to maximize miles earned on our bathroom renovation.  I was right in used the bonused credit card but the one mistake I made was swiping my Flybuys card to pay for the Bunnings gift cards.  Purchases of gift cards don’t count for bonus Flybuys promos but they do count when Coles is assessing your average spend to determine your thresholds for future bonuses.

This is an example of offers Coles emails to Flybuys members.  On rare occasions they offer bonus points for gift cards but this is not the norm.

Flybuys offers

EXAMPLE:

I spend $100 on regular groceries and $200 on Bunnings gift cards.  I have a triple points email offer and the weekly coupon from the sheet mailed each quarter for 500 bonus points if I spend $110 at Coles.  Here is what I earn based on paying with an Amex Platinum Edge.

$300 x 3x supermarket category bonus = 900 Amex Membership rewards.

$300 at 1 point per dollar = 300 base Flybuys points.

$100 of regular grocery spend x 3x triple points from email (gift card doesn’t count) = 300 bonus Flybuys points.

I failed to get the 500 bonus Flybuys because even though I spent $300, $200 of that was on gift cards and I needed $110 of regular grocery spend to hit that target.

BUT……………………

Coles sees me spending $300 in a week and doesn’t consider that $200 of that was on gift cards that wouldn’t be part of my normal grocery budget.  They substantially raised the target on this quarter’s coupon mail out and I now have to spend $260 to get 1000 bonus Flybuys points……………….and gift cards don’t count!  This is basically impossible so I waste this whole quarter (mid Jan – mid April) of not being able to hit bonus targets.

WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE

Do 2 separate transactions.  One for the normal groceries in which I swipe my Flybuys card and pay with the Amex.  And another transaction for the gift cards in which I do NOT swipe the Flybuys card so Coles doesn’t think I am all of a sudden someone who can easily consume $300 of groceries a week!  I will still get the Amex points as Amex doesn’t know or care what I spent the money on at Coles, it all counts as supermarket spend.

If you have not been targeted, don’t give up as United often extends these promos to the general public after elites and credit card holders have has a chance.  They did say “pre-sale” so I am pretty sure that a “sale” will follow.  I’ll let you know if/when this happens.
