My Top Thirty Bird Sightings Of 2014

Most other years this would be a top ten, but with 3 major birding trips this year I am struggling to make it a top thirty!  If you want to see last year’s birds click here.   There is no way I could single out one top bird with so many to choose from so they are being presented in chronological order.  I haven’t finished blogging the Queensland road trip or the African Adventure so I have to cheat a bit with the photos.  They are my photos but just pasted in.

These aren’t necessarily the rarest birds but they were birds that made a major impression on me.  Maybe for their rarity, maybe for their beauty or maybe for their behaviour! Apologies for not having profiles up on about half the birds but I still have a lot more to blog about!

King’s Park, Perth

King’s Park in Perth is easily accessed by free CAT buses from downtown.  Once you are there, have a look for a nice variety of bird species.  Full bird list can be found here.  You can also download a nice brochure with bird pics to help you identify them.

Although it looks close to the city, be aware that the park is on top of a hill.

We were there late in the afternoon but still managed to see Carnaby’s Cockatoos, Rainbow Lorikeets, Ravens and more!

Easy Birding At Yanchep National Park

In my last post, I talked about Yanchep as a destination.  The nice thing about Yanchep is you can be as active or as lazy as you want and you will STILL see lots of birds!  I’m in the lazy camp.  I did do one hike around the small lake opposite Yanchep Inn but mostly I just kicked back at a picnic table or my room’s porch.  Eremaea has a good bird list to give you an idea what to expect.  Here’s some of the birds I saw.

Kangaroos & Cockatoos – The Road To Yanchep

After leaving Kalbarri, we drove through the National Park and met up with route 1 headed south going through Gerladton.  Here are some of the highlights we encountered along the way.

A Tale Of Two Cockatoos

A Tale of Two Cockatoos has been created to help publicise the plight of two endangered species of white-tailed black-cockatoos: Baudin’s and Carnaby’s. Both are found only in south-west Western Australia.  More information is available on their website.  I have embedded the video to help spread the word.

If you would like to have a chance to see these beautiful cockatoos in the wild, please see my series on how to get to Australia on frequent flier miles using Perth as a gateway.  We will be visiting prime habitat for both of these cockatoos on our trip in Feb 2014.  Baudins are commonly found in Wungong Gorge near Armadale and Carnabys are most easily seen in Yanchep National Park.
